About this class

Have you ever looked at a product or a company and wondered, "How did that get started?" The Business of Ideas is a class about understanding how the business world works, from the smallest neighborhood shop to the biggest brands you see every day.

Each week, we explore a different piece of how businesses and economies operate. How do companies make money? What makes a good idea different from a great one? How does marketing work, and why does it work on us? What goes into pricing, branding, and decision-making? We look at real businesses, real stories, and real examples to understand the systems that shape so much of daily life.

This is not a class about starting a business. It's a class about understanding how businesses work, the same way How America Works is about understanding government. We study, we discuss, we analyze, and we explore. Guest speakers from local businesses and organizations join us to share how things work from the inside. Community excursions take us behind the scenes at local businesses and markets to see ideas in action.
